BEG 2 | Irregular ~어/아요 Conjugation

  • ㅡ Irregular:
    • ㅡ becomes ㅓ
      크다 (to be big): 커(요).
      예쁘다 (to be pretty): 예뻐(요).
      쓰다 (to write, use): 써(요).
    • If there are bright vowels in the preceding syllable, ㅡ becomes ㅏ
      배고프다 (to be hungry): 배고파(요).
      바쁘다 (to be busy): 바빠(요).
      나쁘다 (to be bad): 나빠(요).
      아프다 (to be sick): 아파(요).
  • Irregular:
    • 르 becomes
    • Add another ㄹ in the preceding syllable
      배부르다 (to be full): 배불러(요).
      누르다 (to press): 눌러(요).
    • If there are bright vowels in the preceding syllable, 르 becomes 라
    • Add another ㄹ in the preceding syllable
      목마르다 (to be thirsty): 목말라(요).
      빠르다 (to be fast): 빨라(요).
      다르다 (to be different): 달라(요).
  • Irregular: some words with ㅂ changes irregularly, but not all.
    • ㅂ becomes 우 + 어 = 워(요)
      춥다 (to be cold): 추워(요).
      덥다 (to be hot): 더워(요).
      맵다 (to be spicy): 매워(요).
      더럽다 (to be dirty): 더러워(요).
      귀엽다 (to be cute): 귀여워(요).
      굽다 (to pan fry, grill): 구워(요).
  • Irregular: some words with ㄷ changes irregularly, but not all.
    • ㄷ becomes ㄹ (mostly only these among commonly used words)
      듣다 (to listen): 들어(요).
      걷다 (to walk): 걸어(요).
  • Irregular: some words with ㅅ changes irregularly, but not all.
    • ㅅ drops and disappears
      낫다 (v. to get well; adj. to be better): 나아(요).
      붓다 (v. to pour, to swell): 부어(요).
