Important Pronunciation Rules

Re-syllabification (Linking sound) 연음

When a following syllable starts with ㅇ, which has no sound value at the beginning of a syllable, the last consonant of the preceding syllable carries over:

맛있어 (it’s delicious) = [마시써] : both ㅅ and ㅆ are carried over to the following syllable

Last Consonant 받침 /bat-chim/

  1. The last consonant of a syllable (받침 /bat-chim/) is NOT RELEASED! Place your tongue where it should be to pronounce that consonant but stop. Do not actually make that sound.
  2. 받침 (last consonant) is pronounced as its representative basic consonant [ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅇ]
    ㄱ, ㅋ = [ㄱ]
    ㄷ, ㅌ, ㅅ, ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅎ = [ㄷ]
    ㅂ, ㅍ = [ㅂ]
    EXAMPLE: 꽃 = [꼳]
  3. However, within one word or when there is a particle after the word, you pronounce the original sound of the consonant
EXAMPLE: 꽃이 (flower + subject particle) = [꼬치]
