BEG 1 | Simple Sentence with ~아/어요

Korean Word Order

SUBJECT + OBJECT + VERB/ADJECTIVE

  1. Subject or object are often omitted in Korean when it is obvious in the context.
  2. Thanks to particles that show what each word is in a given sentence, word order is flexible.
  3. You can just say a verb or adjective to make the simplest sentence. In other words, YOU MUST KNOW how to conjugate verbs and adjectives to be able to say anything in Korean.

Basic Present Tense Ending ~어/아요

Past tense uses the same conjugation rule as the present tense, so you can learn it very easily once you learn the ~어/아요 ending in Korean!

  • Bright vowels ㅏ, ㅗ + ~아(요)
    좋다 (to be good) : 좋아(요).
    괜찮다 (to be okay): 괜찮아(요).
    알다 (to know): 알아(요).
    살다 (to live): 살아(요).
    많다 (to be many/much): 많아(요).
    작다 (to be small): 작아(요).
    닫다 (to close): 닫아(요).
  • Other vowels + ~어(요)
    먹다 (to eat): 먹어(요).
    읽다 (to read): 읽어(요).
    있다 (to be somewhere, exist): 있어(요).
    없다 (to not exist somewhere): 없어(요).
    열다 (to open): 열어(요).
    믿다 (to trust, believe): 믿어(요).
    사귀다 (to date, to make friends): 사귀어(요).
  • 하다 (to do): 해(요).
  • N+이다 (to be): C이에요 / V 예요. [Non-polite: C이야 / V이야]
  • 아니다 (to not be): 아니에요. [Non-polite: 아니야]
  • With no 받침(Batchim), last consonant on the bottom, some of the vowels contract!
    • ㅏ + 아요 = just ㅏ(요).
      가다 (to go): 가(요).
      자다 (to sleep): 자(요).
      일어나다 (to get up): 일어나(요).
      만나다 (to meet): 만나(요).
    • ㅗ + 아요 = ㅘ(요).
      오다 (to come): 와(요).
      보다 (to watch, see, look): 봐(요).
    • ㅜ + 어요 = ㅝ(요).
      주다 (to give): 줘(요).
      춤 추다 (to dance): 춤 춰(요).
      꿈 꾸다 (to dream): 꿈 꿔(요).
    • ㅣ + 어요 = ㅕ(요).
      마시다 (to drink): 마셔(요).
      헤어지다 (to break up, say bye): 헤어져(요).
      졸리다 (to be sleepy): 졸려(요).
