INT 16 | Indirect Quotation: suggestion, question, command

QUOTE SUGGESTION: ~자고 하다

When PERSON 1 suggested something (~자, ~(으)ㄹ래?, ~(으)ㄹ까?) and you are reporting to PERSON 2 that PERSON 1 suggested it, you use ~자고 하다.

EXAMPLE

수지: 오늘 밥 같이 먹자. (Let’s eat together today.)
((You go to another friend 지민.))
나: 지민아, 수지가 밥 같이 먹자고 했어. (Jimin, Suji suggested that we eat together.)
지민: 응, 나한테도 같이 먹자고 문자했어. (Yeah, she texted me too suggesting we eat together.)

QUOTE QUESTION: ~냐고 하다

When PERSON 1 asked a question, and you are reporting to PERSON 2 that PERSON 1 asked about it, you use ~냐고 하다. Or you can use it to say “Ask someone if…”.

EXAMPLE

지민: 오늘 뭐 해? (What are you doing today?)
나: 그냥 집에 있을 거야. (I will just stay home.)
지민: 그럼 영화 보러 갈래? (Then do you want to go watch a movie?)
나: 몇 시에 갈까? (What time shall we go?)
지민: 5시에 만날까? (Shall we meet at 5?)
나: 그래! (Okay!)
지민: 수지한테도 영화 보고 싶냐고 물어 봐. (Try asking Suji if she wants to see a movie, too.)

((You call Suji.))
수지: 여보세요. (Hello.)
나: 수지야, 우리 영화 볼 건데 지민이가 너도 보고 싶냐고 물어 봤어.
(Suji, we are going to watch a movie, but Jimin asked if you want to watch it, too.)
수지: 응! 몇 시에 보자고 했어? (Yes! What time did you say ‘let’s meet’?)
나: 5시에 보자고 했어. (We suggested to meet at 5.)

QUOTE COMMAND: ~(으)라고 하다

중기 씨가 꼭 전화하라고 했어요. (Jung-gi told me to make sure to call.)

EXAMPLE

엄마가 밥 잘 챙겨 먹으라고 했어요. (Mom told me to eat my meals well.)
의사 선생님이 다음 주에 오라고 했어요. (Doctor told me to come next week.)

걔가 다시는 전화하지 말라고 했어. ㅠㅠ (S/he told me to never call her/him again…)
